Knowing that travelers often struggle to recycle and follow eco-friendly practices while on the road, the Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism recently unveiled GreenTravelArkansas.com, a website with sections featuring green lodging, dining, and attractions including a list of LEED-certified buildings.

Other listings include everything from yoga studios to furniture consignment shops as well as running trails, farmers markets and more.

'We added this to our website offerings because of the growing interest in eco-friendly travel,' said Dena Woerner, communications manager for the Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism. Each month there are 46 Google searches for the phrase Green Arkansas, Woerner said. The department also took note of other popular search terms like Environmentally Friendly Cities, Eco-vacation Packages and Green Hotel Practices.

Nationally, Arkansas is somewhat behind in touting its greenness to tourists and business travelers, according to state tourism director Joe David Rice. The department plans to promote the site through social media outlets and search optimization, according to Woerner. It’s also linked to the department’s main site, Arkansas.com, which has millions of visitors annually, she said.

Businesses interested in being listed on GreenTravelArkansas.com should contact the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism at (501) 682-7602 or by e-mail.
