8 Food Trucks You Can't Miss in Little Rock
In the past few years, Little Rock has seen an explosion of food truck culture. Not only do new trucks hit the streets pretty regularly, but the crowds are becoming more loyal to these meals on wheels. If you’re visiting in the spring or fall, when Arkansas weather is at its best, make sure you check out Food Truck Fridays, where trucks gather for the lunch rush downtown. There’s even a Main Street Food Truck Festival in October and monthly truck meetups around town. Follow the trucks on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to find their daily locations and menu specials.
This truck’s blend of traditional Southern tastes with Asian cuisine is as delicious as it is unique. Named one of the best food trucks in the South by Deep South magazine, make sure this spot is on your to-do list. Try any of the steamed buns or the chicken and dumplings. Miss the truck? There’s a brick-and-mortar at 219 W. Capitol Avenue in downtown.
If you dream in big, fluffy, Belgian waffles and rivers of syrup, then this food truck is for you. The Wagon is all things waffles, but these aren’t your average Eggo. The creative waffle menu includes mixed berries, Nutella, “Pigs in a Blanket” and of course, the best chicken and waffles around. Find them when they’re at Stone’s Throw Brewery for a craft beer and waffle—a delightful pairing.
Fall-off-the-bone barbecue is not something you usually find on wheels, even in the South. Lucky for us, the folks at BlackHound hit the road with their family recipes. Based in Jacksonville, this truck makes all the metro rounds. If you’re a sucker for a great, classic pulled pork sandwich, BlackHound will do you right. Besides, no trip to Little Rock is complete without a bit of barbecue.
If you think your paleo dietary restrictions exclude you from the food truck scene, think again. Beast offers some of the best locally sourced primal and gluten-free meals around. Even if you aren’t of the paleo persuasion, you’re still going to want to get your hands on the tacos, the Primal Biscuits & Gravy or any of the seasonal vegan soups like Paleo Carrot Spice.
The ultimate ice cream truck, Loblolly’s treats melt the coldest of hearts. Their small batch, locally inspired, handcrafted ice creams and sorbets are on rotation, but some of their hall of fame flavors include Rock Town Bourbon Pecan, Muscadine Ginger Sorbet, Dunbar Gardens Fresh Lavender and Arkansas Heirloom Pumpkin Fromage Blanc.
Tacos, loaded bratwurst, cheesesteak and chicken salad with strawberries and watermelon are only a few of the treats awaiting you at Southern Salt. This place specializes in combining cultures like Thai and Southern, making for an assorted and heavenly experience. They even have a vegetarian barbecue sandwich. Just trust us and give it a try.
Ever heard of Alaskan dumplings? We hadn’t either until this tasty truck rolled into town. It’s actually a Russian recipe called pel’meni that the owner brought from his homestate of Alaska. They serve beef, chicken and potato pel’meni dumplings topped with cilantro, curry and sriracha, with a side of toasted bread and a drink — and that’s it. Don’t let it fool you; this simple menu is uniquely scrumptious.
Guten tag! This food truck/mobile catering unit brings authentic Eastern European food to the region with a menu filled with schnitzel, bratwurst, leeks, potatoes and all sorts of delicious German eats. The team also uses locally sourced produce and meats and donates a percentage of proceeds to local charities. Pass the spätzle, please.
Main Street Food Truck Festival
It’s the mecca of all food truck meetups in central Arkansas, and it is quite the site to see (and taste!). It often catches the eye of national media, with good reason. 2015’s festival spanned five city blocks and welcomed more than 45 trucks and carts lining Main Street in downtown Little Rock, and it returns bigger and better every October.
